The climate in Germany
Like the cuisine, the climate in Germany varies! Overall, it is incredibly difficult to make a forecast of the weather across the country. Various climatic zones meet here. From the mountainous climate of the Alps, to the continental climate on the south-east of Germany and on to the maritime north you will find all weather. What does that tell us? Everything is possible and the weather cannot be changed. In general, we only order the best weather for our guests. But packing sensible clothing can’t hurt…
German cuisine
You can’t lump German food together. It is as diverse as Germany herself. The hearty Bavarian cuisine is more similar to that in Austria. The image of the grandmother, standing in front of steaming pots conjuring up treats such as delicious roast pork with dumplings, meatballs and ‘Sauerbraten’ is a reality in south Germany.
‘Thüringer Klöße’ (dumplings), ‘Köningsberger Klopse’ (meatballs with white sauce) or ‘Kohlrouladen’ (cabbage rolls) are just a few examples of central German cuisine. Here too it quickly becomes clear, German cuisine relies on rich foods. Here you cook with that extra dollop of love (butter) on top! Yum!
But what is this pink goop supposed to be? Labskaus? For all non-Germans, Labskaus is a north German meal created by sailors. It consists of potatoes mashed with beetroot (hence the pink colour) and canned meat served with pickled herring ‘rollmops’, pickles and fried egg. And what else is being served in northern Germany? Fish is of course high on the list, as is potato salad, kale, turnip and beetroot. Here they love hot steaming stews and thick soups with coarse sausage. Just as the weather suggests!
