Course of the Inn

Source of the Inn

The Inn, whose name is derived from the Celtic word for water, originates in the Swiss Alps, to be more precise in the Upper Engadine, at 2564 metres above sea level. From there the tributary of the Danube runs through Austria and Southern Germany, where it finally flows into the Danube at Passau.

River length

The total length of the Inn is 517km, of which a good two thirds of the river flows through the Alps. The Austrian part of the Inn is 193 km long.

Cycle Path

Mostly near the river, you cycle along the Inn on mostly paved routes, but also on low-traffic side roads an unpaved paths.

Height Profile

The first part of the Inn Cycle Path, which is located in Switzerland starts at approx. 1800 metres above sea level. From there it goes steadily downhill along the Inn with some, sometimes very steep, climbs. As compensation, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of the Alps. From Switzerland to the Tyrolean Landeck, the Inn Cycle Path loses approx. 1000 metres in height with a length of approx. 150km. In the second half from Landeck to Passau, however, it loses only 300 metres in height with a route length of 360km.
