Useful information about a cycling holiday in Portugal

Boardwalk at the beach

The climate in Portugal

The best time to travel to Portugal is undoubtedly the spring and autumn, because cycling is the most fun at a temperature average of 22 degrees. It can get hotter in summer of course, but the wind that blows from the Atlantic often provides a refreshing cool down. The further you go inland, the warmer the temperature will feel. Fortunately. The climate in Portugal is rather dry and pleasant.

A look into the Portuguese kitchen

An evening in a Portuguese restaurant begins with caldo verde – a creamy potato soup with cabbage. Most of the varied cuisine in Portugal consists of fish and seafood. The undisputed Portuguese national dish is Bacalhau – salted and dried swordfish. Arroz de mariscos is also very popular – a rice pan with seafood, similar to paella. Everything is seasoned with fresh herbs and lots of garlic. Grilling is one of the post popular food preparation methods in Portugal. For dessert, there is a wonderfully sweet rice pudding or the famous Pastel de Nata. Bom apetite!

Did you know…

  • …that left-hand driving prevailed in Portugal until 1928?
  • …that a Portuguese woman brought tea to England?
  • …that Lisbon is the oldest city in Western Europe?
  • …that it’s not only Rome that was built on seven hills, Lisbon was too?
  • …that 95% of the Portuguese territory consists of ocean?
