Cycling holidays in Slovenia

EXPERIENCE IMPRESSIVE DIVERSITY BY BIKE

Due to its small area – it is only about half the size of the Netherlands, Denmark or Switzerland – and its location between better-known tourist destinations such as Italy or Croatia, Slovenia is often overlooked. However the small country offers numerous unparalleled and unique attractions not found elsewhere in the region. That is why the small country is definitely worth a cycling holiday!

Panorama of Postojna

Unique natural scenery

In each of the regions there are impressive and idyllic landscapes originally preserved thanks to the country’s sparse population. In general, cycling in Slovenia is unique and the focus is largely on nature since there are hardly any large cities in this small country. So the journey through the breathtaking panorama is only broken up by small villages. Nevertheless, the infrastructure is in excellent condition – away from the busy main roads there are many well-developed side roads and the Slovenian state has already started laying asphalt paths expecially for cycling.

Emerald Route Slovenia

Our popular cycle holiday in Slovenia leads through the heart of Slovenia, along the Emerald Route – an old, historic trade route that connects the Mediterranean coast with the Northern Alpine region. You start in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana with its beautiful old town centre and Ljubljana castle and from there cycle mostly on side roads with very little traffic southwards via the Italian city of Trieste to the port city of Piran.

Infinite Cycling Fun

We offer different routes according to your taste along which you will get to know Slovenia and its neighbouring countries. How about a cycling holiday on the Istrian coast, for instance, which takes you from Trieste in Italy via Piran in Slovenia to Pula. If you wish you can start even further away and take the route from the lagoon city of Venice to the Croatian town of Poreč. Alternatively you can explore the impressive Dolomites at the beginning and cycle from there in the direction of Bled to Trieste. Still want more? Then we can warmly recommend the ‘Southern Star’-cycle holiday through four different countries.

The Climate in Slovenia

Slovenia has a total of three climatic zones in a small area. With its small spread, Slovenia offers a variety and wealth of varied landscapes probably unmatched by any other European country. While the Adriatic coast has a Mediterranean climate and sunny Mediterranean beaches await you, the centre and East of the country near the Croatian border are characterised by continental weather. In the North near Austria on the other hand there are foothills of the Alps with cold, harsh winters and hot summers.

Slovenian Cuisine

Just like the country itself, the cuisine in Slovenia is very diverse. Depending on where you are in the country, the menu constantly changes. On the Adriatic coast, for instance, people eat something different than in the Slovenian Alps. However, what counts across the country is cooking with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The air-dried ham, Kraši pršutk, with a centuries-old tradition, is particularly popular as a starter. This is followed by the well-known national dish, the Carniolan sausage, which is served warm with sauerkraut or cold with a roll of bread. For dessert there is the potica, a delicious rolled cake made from yeast dough with various fillings. Or the Prekmurska gibanica dessert, filled with poppy seeds, quark, walnuts and apples.
