Lake Resia – Verona

Light-footed downhill to the south.

A small balcony that had a big impact. Two young people in love till the death. Live the story in the historic town of Verona. Where Shakespeare’s tragedy ‘Romeo and Juliet’ was set is your final destination. In Reschen you hop onto the bike and start peddling. Over eight days you will cycle through a Mediterranean landscape, grape-hung vineyards and numerous orchards. At every stop there is another delicacy to try!

Details of the cycle tour from Lake Reschen to Verona

When Germany gradually changes into Italy you have arrived in the ‘real’ South Tyrol. Take the bike along the Adige to Schlanders, Merano, Bolzano, Trento and Riva Over. These towns are definitely worth a pit stop. There are plenty of freshly harvested fruit and vegetables there. Once you’ve arrived in Verona, it’s time to put your feet up. After a short break, the search for the best ‘gelato’ commences. Tipp: Try a daring ice cream flavour. How about fig caramel in ice cream parlour Gelateria Ballini on Piazza San Tomaso? Tuck in and enjoy!

Highlights of the cycle tour from Lake Reschen to Verona

  • Colourful sea of flowers: Depending on the season, northern Italy shines in colourful floral splendour. Pink, white and pale yellow blooms ooze their beguiling fragrance. Take a whiff for yourself!
  • Messner Mountain Museum: In South Tyrol, the Museum in Bolzano has dedicated itself entirely to the man from the ice. Learn about the Stone Age and the mystery surrounding Ötzi.
  • Experience ‘Amore mio’ in Verona: Experience the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliette during an interactive city tour.

Useful information about the cycle tour from Lake Reschen to Verona

Beautiful cycle paths along the Adige await you. Cycle across few gradients and almost continually asphalted paths through picturesque towns. Those cyclists who enjoy riding downhill will also be pleased: from the Rechenpass to Lake Garda, the route continues for 1500 metres down the valley. But please – remember to break!

Itinerary

By car or by train and bus to Reschenpass (mountain pass) and further to Reschen.

Sample hotel: Villa Claudia Augusta

Today you will cycle alongside Lake Reschen with a great view of the sunken church of Graun until you reach the medieval village of Glurns (perfectly preserved medieval city walls). Your destination is Schlanders, the capital of the famous Vinschgauer.

Sample hotel: Goldene Rose

On your way you will come across some pretty castles (mountaineer Reinhold Messner’s castle Juval) and you will get marvellous views of the impressive mountain massif Ortlermassiv and the mountain pass Stilfserjoch whilst you are rolling down on your bike into the tranquil Merano with its Mediterranean vegetation.

Sample hotel: Flora

Two paths lead to Bolzano: One along the Adige River and another through the impressive landscape of orchards via Lana and Eppan. Here you can find the Messner Mountain Museum in the well-restored ruin of Sigmundskron. Ötzi – the man from the ice – is worth a visit.

Sample hotel: Mondschein

You will mainly cycle along the river Adige and partly through orchards to Salurn, where the German speaking South Tyrol ends. From here, you will continue to Trento with its interesting old town.

Sample hotel: NH Trento

First, you will continue cycling along the Adige through Rovereto and on to Mori from where the route leads westwards towards Lake Garda. In Mori you will taste the world famous pistachio ice-cream in the Gelateria Bologna. After a short ascent (Passo San Giovanni), you will descend down to the lake and to Torbole and further on to Riva. From here, a boat will take you down the entire length of the lake.

Sample hotel: Bonotto Desenzano

You will travel on partly flat, partly slightly hilly roads through the vine hills to Verona, a city full of attractions (festival arena, Julia’s house, old city walls).

Sample hotel: ARK

Tour character

You will ride on beautiful bike paths mainly along the Adige River. The route will lead you from Reschenpass (mountain pass) almost 1,500 metres in altitude downhill to Lake Garda. However, you will have to cycle up some small climbs too. Overall, you will find yourself on beautiful bike paths and asphalted country roads. Unfortunately, moderate traffic is unavoidable on some short connecting roads.

Etsch Tour
Bravo! Alles in Allem sehr empfehlenswert.

Alto Adige Bike Ride is living the dream
95% or more of trails are on dedicated bike path...usually well marked and very scenic all the way. The high point is when riding down the small pass after Trento and seeing Lake Garda from high up. All overnight hotels were very high quality and in great locations. Luggage transfers worked well. Breakfast was always above expectation. The navigation app provided by EuroBike was very helpful.
