Salzkammergut-Tour

A Summer Holiday full of Nature and History.

Even Emperor Franz and Empress Sissi knew how to appreciate the Salzkammergut and all its charms, as they regularly "holidayed" at their summer residence in Bad Ischl. Follow in their footsteps - albeit on a bicycle - and immerse yourself in this very special world with glittering lakes, excellent cuisine, dreamlike panoramas and delightful villages.

Details of the 8-day cycling tour with Eurobike

Wolfgangsee, Mondsee, Attersee, Traunsee, Hallstätter See - you can't get enough of cool water? Then you've definitely come to the right place, because one dreamy lake after another awaits you. Head from St. Gilgen to the Zwölferhorn or explore the former film set of Orth Castle in Gmunden.

On day 5, you will travel via Bad Aussee to the Ausseer Land region, where magnificent panoramas once again meet idyllic lakes. Have you always wanted traditional Austrian clothing? Then Bad Aussee is the place to be, because here you can find everything to do with historical clothing. Other gems of the region await you, e.g. Hallstatt and Bad Ischl, before you head back along the Ischler Ache river.

Highlights of the cycling tour through the Salzkammergut

  • Magnificent panorama from the Schafberg at Lake Wolfgang: The easiest way to reach the summit is to take the Schafberg cable car. At 1,782 metres above sea level, magnificent views open up. Of course, you can hike up as well, but you should pace yourself for the next few days of the tour.
  • The fabulous Toplitzsee appears black and opaque even in the best weather. But it captivates with its extraordinary beauty. Incidentally, it has its very own animal that lives at a depth of around 60 metres - a worm! A treasure of gold is also said to be at the bottom.
  • The World Heritage Region of Hallstatt: The village, nestled tightly between lake and mountain, is probably one of the most extraordinary places in the world. There’s a reason why there’s a copy of Hallstatt - in China.
  • The imperial town of Bad Ischl: Live like an emperor or empress here! Nibble on the delicacies of the local pastry shops, follow in Sissi's footsteps in the spa gardens and enjoy the liveliness of the small imperial town.

Things to know about the tour

The tour features a fine mix of flat sections on the lakeshores with occasional climbs and hilly terrain between the lakes. Always allow time for a break to soak up the magnificent mountain panoramas.

Itinerary

Welcome briefing and bike fitting. We recommend that you take a stroll along the lake.

Hotel (example) category A and B: Aberseehof

In the morning there is plenty of time to explore St. Wolfgang. Today’s short tour leads you at first along the lovely lake Wolfgang to St. Gilgen. Then you cycle via the 'Scharfling’ and past the romantic Lake Krottensee to Lake Mondsee. The towering sheer rockface 'Drachenwand’ (dragon’s wall) will be your constant companion until you get to the well-known lake resort with its palace and abbey church.

Hotel (example) category A: Krone

Hotel (example) category B: Meingast

The cycle path takes you along the banks of lake Mondsee to the dark-green lake Attersee. Onwards to the North shore and then through the Aurach valley to Lake Traunsee. Gmunden, famous for ist pottery and Ort Palace, has often been used as a movie backdrop. Overnight stay in Altmünster, Traunkirchen or Ebensee.

Hotel (example) category A: Post Ebensee

Hotel (example) category B: Hocheck

Follow the cycle path from Ebensee along the river Traun to famous Bad Ischl. From here you you take a train ride and delve into the 'deepest’ part of Salzkammergut, namely Bad Aussee. Here you have the option of doing a short bike tour to Lake Altaussee. There is also a marvellous circular path around the lake amidst the surrounding mountains.

Hotel (example) category A: Erzherzog Johann

Hotel (example) category B: Jufa Bad Aussee

Today’s cycle tour is all about the Ausseer Lakes. Lake Grundlsee and Lake Toplitz are world-famous due to their crystal clear water and the glorious mountain backdrop that they both offer. You will cycle past lake Altaussee one more time before you return to the spa resort, Bad Aussee.

Hotel (example) category B: Jufa Bad Aussee

You head from one imperial spa resort to the next! But this time you get to visit the world’s most stunning lake resort, Hallstatt too. With an entire epoche named after it, naturally there is a lot to see and visit. The world’s oldest salt mine and the bone house are only a few examples as to how this charming little place has attracted countless visitors from all over the globe. In Bad Ischl the emperor Franz Josef and his wife Sissi were regulars during the summer and loved spending time in the well-known Cafè Zauner and enjoying a slice of the incredibly delicious bundt cake 'Guglhupf’.

Hotel (example) category A: Goldenes Schiff

Hotel  (example) category B: Gasthof Sandwirt

Today you head along the Ischler Ache over to Lake Wolfgangsee. Today you have plenty of time again, which allows you to explore St. Wolfgang and to visit the hotel 'Weißes Rössl’ and the pilgrimage church. We recommend a final boat trip on the lake or to even take the cog railway to the top of the Schafberg mountain with an altitude of 1782m!

Tour character

The terrain along the banks of the lakes is completely flat. There are a few hills interspersed. Most of the tour is spent on cycle paths and on sideroads with little traffic cycling from one lake to the next. Cycling on fairly busy roads is unfortunately unavoidable for a few short sections of the tour.

Genussradeln in herrlicher Landschaft

Abwechslungsreiche Rundtour in wunderschöner Landschaft
