Somewhere, far beyond the horizon, Venice is waiting, the sea is waiting for you! But before you get there, the temptation must be resisted. Many attractive landscapes and cities will invite you to linger on your journey: the vineyards of South Tyrol, Lake Garda, Verona and Padua. And then, at some point, you will see the sea. Venice. The city built on stilts. "I saw the buildings rise from the waves like sorcerer's dazzle; a millennium stood before me, its dark wings stretched out," wrote Lord Byron. You too will not be able to escape the magic of Venice. And yet: the way is the goal!
Details about the cycling vacation in South Tyrol
Pure Italian lifestyle - discover Bolzano's Laubengasse, stroll through the Piazza delle Erbe in Verona and experience Venice from the gondola. A grappa tasting also awaits you in the lagoon city.
Along the cycle path via Lana and through numerous orchards and vineyards in the area of the South Tyrolean Wine Route to Bolzano with its arcades and the "Ötzi" museum. From here you cycle via Appiano and Lake Caldaro to the charming wine village of Ora.
On the Etsch cycle trail it is easy to cycle to the impressive Trento. The route continues via the old Tyrolean border town of Rovereto to Mori. From here the tour heads west towards Lake Garda. In Mori, you will taste the famous pistachio ice cream at the Gelateria Bologna. After a short ascent at the small Passo S. Giovanni (150 m), the descent to the lake follows to Torbole or Riva.
On the impressive Via Ponale, you cycle up to Lake Ledro. Follow the valley of the same name to the next picturesque alpine lake. Lake Idro is now your companion for a while. Its excellent water quality and magnificent mountain panorama will delight you. On the bike path through the Val Sabbia, you will then continue slightly downhill until the mighty Lake Garda appears in front of you again. In Salò, take a leisurely stroll along the flower-filled promenade and treat yourself to a creamy gelato.
Gently hilly, this cycling stage leads you a little into the hinterland. With Lugana, Chiaretto and Groppello, the typical and historic wines of Lake Garda are pressed here. From Desenzano it's partly flat, partly slightly hilly to Verona, a city full of sights with festival arena, House of Juliet, and the old city wall.
First flat and then through the hills of the "Monti Berici," the excursion area of Vicenza, with beautiful views over the city. In the old town of Vicenza, you can still feel the spirit of Palladio, the famous architect of the Middle Ages.
Numerous Venetian villas are located on the exit of Vicenza, such as Villa Rotonda. Along the Bacchiglione, the road leads to Abano Terme, one of Italy's famous spas. From here it is not far to Padua, the city of St. Anthony and the scholars. Mostly driven by the light wind, you cycle leisurely towards the sea. The landscape is characterized by meadows and fields. The stage destination is on the mainland off Venice with excellent bus connections to the lagoon city. At the end of the trip, a small grappa tasting awaits you not far from St. Mark's Square!
Overall easy tour. There are just a few short ascents which can also be mastered by pushing the bike up. You cycle on marvellous cycle paths and on little side roads and on main roads only for short sections. The route is mainly asphalted, several longer segments also on well-maintained dirt roads.
