Holland's most beautiful cities

Between Holland’s windmills and tulips

This very diverse cycle tour takes you to the most beautiful old cities that Holland has to offer: Utrecht, Gouda, Den Haag, Delft, Schiedam and Rotterdam. There, you can enjoy the unique atmosphere with romantic gables and canals. Sample a piece of cheese in Gouda and marvel at the picturesque, well-preserved old town. Delft is known for the fragile works of art, the Delfts Blauw (Delft Fayence) and for the painter Johannes Vermeer, who has achieved world fame. Dordrecht, Holland’s oldest city, has no less than 1000 monuments!

Details about the cycle tour through the Netherlands

Starting in Utrecht, you cycle via Amsterdam, one of the most famous cycling cities, from one pretty village to the next. The special thing about it: the region is richly equipped with windmills and traditional wooden houses. On your way through the rural area, old monuments, extensive dunes and modern buildings line the cycle paths.

As you pedal you reach the cities of Amsterdam, Zandvoor, Den Haag, Rotterdam and Gouda. From there you cycle back to Utrecht. In a nutshell: the trip through the Netherlands not only impresses with its cultural highlights, but above all with its unique landscape!

Highlights of the Netherlands

  • Den Haag: Not only is the seat of parliament and government of the Netherlands located here, but also the residence of the royal family. In addition, Den Haag is the only major city in the Netherlands with a beach along the North Sea coast - a perfect mix of nature and culture that invites you to explore.
  • Gouda: Another highlight of the tour is the city of Gouda, world-famous for the cheese of the same name. Since 1395, the cheese market has been held annually from April to August on the market square with its imposing town hall. As much of the Gouda is still produced and stored in and around the city, the region is also called Cheese Valley.
  • Port city of Rotterdam: Unlike other cities, Rotterdam is a modern city with skyscrapers. City tip: Discover the many faces of the big city! Be it a leisurely stroll along the harbour, a coffee in the city centre or a stroll through the market hall. You will be amazed at what Rotterdam has to offer!

Itinerary

You leisurely cycle along the river Vecht to Amsterdam. The character of the area is mainly shaped by the country estates and tea pavilions that Amsterdam merchants had built in the 17th and 18th centuries. Enjoy the evening in the vibrant city, there is a lot to discover!

After you have left the historical and interesting city centre of Amsterfam, you cycle through Zuid-Kennemerland, a colourful and natural region. Zandvoort, also called the „Pearl on the Sea“, welcomes you with a kilometre long white sandy beach and is surrounded by two beautiful dune areas with rich flora and fauna.

This stage takes you through dunes and the flower bulb area. In spring, a visit to the Keukenhof, the mecca for flower lovers, is a must. Experience traditional and modern garden architecture on 32 hectares of parkland. Numerous seaside resorts await you along the coast, from small, cosy family beaches to large, lively seaside resorts. The city of The Hague welcomes you with numerous monuments and is the centre of Dutch politics. The Noordeinde Palace is the ‚workplace‘ of the King.

On the way to Rotterdam is Delft, city of history, culture and relaxation, but also city of the painter Vermeer, the Orangemen, the United East India Company and ceramics. Everyone agrees that Delft is one of the most beautiful cities in the Netherlands. Buildings with magnificent gables, tree-lined canals with picturesque bridges and inviting terraces characterise the lively historic centre. Rotterdam is a city with many faces, it is the architectural city of Holland, where the famous skyline is constantly changing. Let yourself drift and explore the city on your own.

In lively Rotterdam you can still visit the historic harbour before you continue with your route. You have the option to take the catamaran speedboat directly to Ridderkerk, from where you cycle via Kinderdijk (world-famous windmills) to Gouda, the well-known ‚Cheese Town‘ of the Netherlands. There is a lot to discover in this beautiful historical city full of hip, atmposhperic places and passionate people. From the market square with its iconic town hall to the glorious stained glass windows of the Sint Jan church and from street food to chic retaurants, there is something for everyone. A shorter alternative route is to cycle directly from Kinderdijk to Gouda

After riding through the special cultural-historic scenery with old rivers, wide polders, lakes and swampy moor areas, you reach Utrecht. It owes much of its lively character to the fantastic canals, which are truly unique thanks to their waterfront footpaths

Tour character

The route is very well signposted, mostly flat, with little traffic and even car-free in parts. The cities themselves are perfect for exploring by bike.

wirklich tolle Radtour
