Rhine Cycle Path I, Chur – Basel
Rhine Cycle Path I.
Arrival in Chur
Chur is the oldest city in Switzerland. Its history can be tracked back over 11000 years. Stroll through the small alleys in the old town.
The Bündner Herrschaft, the fertile garden and wine-growing region of Graubünden, is situated on slate rubble cones. It is also the home of Heidi, Geißenpeter and the Alpöhi.
The Rhine Valley is a landscape often spoiled by the warm foehn. Much land was reclaimed during river corrections of the Alpine Rhine in the Rhine Valley. This created the largest freshwater delta in Europe with a rich bird life at the mouth of the Rhine into Lake Constance.
Lake Constance: the soul of Europe. The area around the green and silver shimmering "Swabian Sea" is an ancient cultural landscape. Despite vibrant shoreline life, Thurgau has remained an idyllic stretch of land with castles and large orchards.
The lovely landscape at the elongated Untersee has already attracted Napoleon, the richly decorated town of Stein am Rhein is visited by thousands of tourists every year, just like the most powerful waterfall in Europe, the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen.
The Hochrhein has sought its bed between the Black Forest and the Jura, sometimes wide and lazy, other times narrow and wild. Romantic floodplain landscapes and historic Rhine towns make this stage a cultural delight.
The stage starts in the wellness oasis of Bad Zurzach and leads to the 4-bridge village of Koblenz, near the Klingnau reservoir. The picturesque town of Laufenburg is soon followed by Rheinfelden, the oldest Zähringer town in Switzerland. After the Roman settlement of Augusta Raurica, the agglomeration vibrates, the asphalt sweats, the commuter groans; the city entices with bustle, culture and hustle and bustle, a true "Basel treat".
