Crossing the Alps by bike is a great way to take in the beauty of the different mountain landscapes without completely exhausting yourself. Hop onto the saddle with us, there is a lot to experience!

Details of the cycling tour from Munich to Meran

You start in Munich with big city flair! The Bavarian capital has a lot to offer, be it a rustic stop in a beer garden, the numerous sights and museums or a shopping tour through the chic boutiques. With each stage, the surroundings become more rural. The route takes you over Lake Starnberg to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. If you decide to take the Zugspitzbahn up to an altitude of 2,962 metres, you will be treated to a panoramic view of some 400 Alpine mountains. The idyllic Mittenwald is not only the highest health resort in Germany, you can also take a close look at the artistically decorated house facades.

On the stage through Austria, you will pass Stams with its baroque monastery and the picturesque Imst in the Ötztal valley. Once in South Tyrol, the route leads through the Vinschgau Valley with many great attractions along the way towards Merano. Lake Reschen, Glurns and Schlanders as well as numerous castles, palaces and vineyards line the tour.

Highlights of the 8-day tour

  • The sophisticated Lake Starnberg: Stroll through the beautiful little towns of Starnberg and Bernried, enjoy the views and also do some "people watching" over some coffee and cake. Lake Starnberg is generally regarded as a popular destination for the rich and famous.
  • The idyllic Leutasch Valley stretches 16 km through northern Tyrol. Visitors are spoiled with crystal-clear lakes and streams, typical Tyrolean friendliness and culinary delights, wonderful views of the Wetterstein Mountains, green forests and meadows and much more. - It's best to see for yourself!
  • Magnificent panorama of the Ortler: Once you have crossed the Reschen Pass, you will descend about 1,200 metres in altitude. You can enjoy the numerous panoramas of "King Ortler", which towers 3,905 metres above the ground.
  • The Passer Promenade in Merano: Along the Passer River, Merano is criss-crossed by beautiful promenades that invite you to take a stroll. Due to the special climate, the flora is subtropical and exudes a Mediterranean flair.

Useful information about the tour

The cycle paths and side roads here are excellently developed, but you have to cycle uphill in places on all days. A bus will take you to the Reschen Pass and the Vinschgau Railway can shorten the stage in South Tyrol. The 40 to 65 km long stages should be supplemented by numerous rest stops to enjoy the beautiful panoramas.

Itinerary

Bavaria’s state capital awaits its visitors with numerous sights (English Garden, town hall, ‚Hofbräuhaus‘,…).

Hotel example: NYX Hotel München

From Munich through the Forstenrieder Park onto Lake Starnberger See. From Starnberg on the cycle path directly along the lakeside to Ambach or onwards to Bernried. The lake tempts you with crystal-clear waters and the views are fabulous onto the surrounding mountains.

Hotel example:Landhotel Huber am See

Initially a cycle tour past Lake Riegsee to Murnau. Onwards through the nature reserve Murnauer Moos (Central Europe’s largest marsh area) and through unspoilt nature following the river Loisach to Garmisch Partenkirchen. Here you have the option of a ride with the Zugspitzbahn up to an altitude of 2962 m (autonomously). From up there you enjoy a stupendous view over the Alps.

Hotel example: Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten

Today you proceed along the beautifully developed cycle path all the way to the river Isar. You cycle through the sunny high mountain valley with marvellous panoramic views onto the Karwendel- and Wettersteingebirge-mountains to Mittenwald. Here we highly recommend a break and to take a stroll throughh the village with its Lüftlmalerei-painted houses. You then continue in a spectacular fashion through the Leutaschklamm-ravine to Austria. You cycle along the Leutasch-stream through the stunningly beautiful valley all the way into your Day Finish.

Hotel example: Hotel Bergfrieden

Today you cycle over into the Inn-river valley. You leave Leutasch on a country road leading you on gently hilly terrain before an eight-kilometre long descent takes you to Telfs. You cycle on the former towpath along the river Inn and so reach Stams with its Baroque Cistercian monastery. Then via Haiming it is not far to Imst, the so-called „North Tyrolean Merano‘.

Hotel example: Hotel Hirschen

Today, you will cycle along the river Inn, past the monastery Zams to Landeck. A bus will take you to Nauders from where you will cycle less than 100 metres in altitude uphill to the mountain pass Reschenpass. From there, you will cycle downhill to Lake Reschensee and continue on minor roads to Mals (many towers in the centre) or to Burgeis at the foot of the castle Marienburg.

Hotel example: Hotel zum Hirschen

Your day starts with a trip to Glurns (perfectly preserved medieval city walls). Then, you will cycle via the Montani ruins, through Schlanders, down to Merano. On your way, you will come across some pretty castles (mountaineer Reinhold Messner’s castle Juval) and you will get marvellous views of the impressive mountain massif Ortlermassiv and the mountain pass Stilfserjoch. Since 2004, the Venosta train (Vinschgaubahn) has been operating again between Mals and Merano. You can almost always take this train to travel a part of your journey.

Hotel example: Villa Laurus

Now it would actually be nice to add a few more days ... It is also a great way to continue the tour all the way to Lake Garda.

Tour character

You cycle on marvellous cycle paths and little side roads and only on very short sections on main roads. Nearly every day there are small ascents to be tackled. The Reschen-pass will be bypassed via a bus transfer, then follows a descent of approx. 1200 metres in altitude to Merano. The route is mainly asphalted, a few longer sections also on well-maintained dirt roads.

Beste Radtour, hervorragend ausgearbeitet!
