Cycle routes in Alsace
With a network of over 2,500 km of cycle paths, the routes in Alsace are superbly developed. The dense network of paths offers cyclists a variety of options on their journey. Along the Rhine, the cycle paths are flat, as soon as you head towards the vineyards, the route becomes a little hillier. The steepest and most challenging cycle paths are in the Vosges. Overall, however, it can be said that the network of cycle paths in Alsace is so well-developed and so varied that everyone gets their money's worth.
The climate in Alsace
Very pleasant weather invites cyclists from all over the world to Alsace. The year starts with rather mild temperatures and some rainfall. However, from spring you can expect pleasant temperatures, sunshine and dry weather. From April to October, cycling is really good here. But please keep in mind that occasional rain showers are possible at any time.
The Alsatian cuisine
Have you ever heard of Choucroute? There is nothing hidden behind this pretty word other than the Austrian and German favourite of sauerkraut. This simple dish is very popular in Alsace and is often served with sausages, pork and potatoes – almost like traditional Austrian food. And the Alsatian version of the famous Coq au vin, namely Coq au Riesling, the more controversial foie gras, the famous Tarte Flambée (pizza-like crispy base with sour cream) or sweet delicacies such as the Tarte aux pommes (Alsatian apple pie) or the Tarte aux Squetsches (plum cake) make the hears of foodies beat faster.
The famous Tarte Flambée from Alsace
The delicious tarte is considered the French answer to pizza. Wafer-thin bread dough is traditionally topped with onions, bacon, sour cream and baked in a very hot oven. The name comes from the fact that the tarte flambée is baked before the bread, when there are flames and the oven is at its hottest. If the tarte darkens too quickly, the oven is too hot and you have to wait a bit. However, if the baking time is too long, some more wood has to be added. Please don’t miss trying this simple delicacy at least once. It’s really worth it!
