Hanseroute, MS DE Holland
Rivers, Hanseatic towns and fishing villages.
Arrival in Amsterdam
Embarkation and check-in in Amsterdam. The crew will welcome you on board between 1 pm and 2 pm. At about 2 pm the ship will sail from Amsterdam via the Amsterdam-Rhine-Canal to Wijk bij Duurstede, a town on the Rhine. Here you will spend your first night.
During breakfast the ship will sail to Wageningen. From here, the first tour of the week will take you through the lovely Lower Rhine Valley and on through the Veluwe, a large forest and heath area. In the late afternoon you cycle through the suburbs and past the beautiful parks Sonsbeek and Zijpendaal to Arnhem. The De Hollandan lies overnight near the city center of this former Hanseatic city. During World War II, Arnhem was the site of Operation Market Garden, the largest air maneuver in history. It failed because it was not possible to capture a bridge over the Rhine and this led to the destruction of the British 1st Parachute Division.
You leave Arnhem by ship and start your bike tour today in the small Hanseatic town of Doesburg. From here there are two possibilities to cycle to Zutphen and Deventer. Both options first run to Bronkhorst, which prides itself on being the smallest town in the Netherlands. From Bronkhorst, the shorter option takes you by ferry to the west bank of the IJssel, while the longer option stays on the east bank. Both variants take you through the countryside to Zutphen. Both routes end in Deventer, which is known for its delicious spiced gingerbread. In the evening, the tour guide offers a short guided walking tour of the city, which you should not miss!
During breakfast the De Holland will take you to Wijhe, where a nice bike tour to Hattem starts. The shorter route goes along the river bank, the longer bike tour goes over the eastern Veluwe area. Hattem has a rich past, the traces of which can still be seen everywhere. From Hattem it is only a short distance to Zwolle. This city is considered one of the most beautiful Hanseatic cities. From Zwolle you will continue to Kampen. In the evening you can discover the highlights of this largest Hanseatic city in the Netherlands on your own.
From Kampen, our bike tour takes us along the "Randseen" to the fishing port of Elburg. Here there are many popular water sports activities during the summer. From Elburg the bike tour continues through the forests and moors of the Veluwe to the beautiful Harderwijk, where you will spend the night in the historic fishing harbor. In the 16th century Harderwijk had the largest fish market in the Zuiderzee region. Today it is still a beautiful old town worth exploring.
Again, there are two routes to choose from. A shorter bike ride along the banks of the "Randmeren" or a combination of the riverside route and a longer alternative that runs through adjacent forests. In the afternoon you will pass Spakenburg, a fishing village known for its traditional costumes that are still worn today. Today's berth is in Huizen.
Huizen is the starting point for a tour to the beautiful fortified towns of Naarden and Muiden. The latter is famous for its historic castle on the water. From Muiden you will drive on quiet roads to your destination, the world famous metropolis of Amsterdam. You will have all afternoon and evening to explore this vibrant city. Take the opportunity to take a canal tour. Visit the Anne Frank House or one of the other world famous museums around the Museumplein. Or simply enjoy the lively life in this multicultural city.
Departure or extension
Today ends the last part of your trip, but we won't let you disembark with an empty stomach. Before disembarkation until 9:30 a.m. you will have a good breakfast on board one last time.
