Day 1
We pick up our bikes at the office, say goodbye to my colleagues and get going. The route first takes us though the Trumer Lakes region, more specifically over the shores of Obertrumersee and Mattsee in the direction of Irrsee. The morning clouds soon disappear, and we enjoy our first stage with sunbeams shining on our faces. The routes on the lake shores run completely flat, only the routes between the lakes, which lead us through lush green fields and greets us with a short view of the Wallersee, is hillier. At the Irrsee we take a short break to enjoy the view before we reach the stage destination – Mondsee.
Day 2
We start very early, because we have around 80km to tackle. A fortifying breakfast could not be missed! Today’s route takes us along numerous lakesides. We especially like the turquoise shimmering Attersee. The gentle climbs along the route do not bother us much. We continue towards Traunsee, through numerous fields of sunflowers and rapeseed. We reach our destination of Traunkirchen shortly before the first drops of rain start to fall.
A spacious room with a balcony and fantastic view awaits us on the Traunsee, with the Traunstein behind. We end the day with dinner in the cosy hotel restaurant and a glass of wine.
Day 3
It’s possible to take bikes on almost all trains in Austria. So we first head to Bad Aussee by train, where we start today’s stage with a round trip on the Grundlsee. We travel over the Koppenpass, with a longer and more intensive climb to Obertraun and on to the Halstattersee. We take a short breather to admire the view over the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hallstatt – we earned it!
The Ostuferradweg is an approximately 8km-long route that leads from Obertraun directly to Bad Goisern. Since the path has few difficult climbs and travels over a suspension bridge over the deepest point of the Hallstattersee, we take this route. Numerous picnic spots on the path invite you to stop and rest.
We were welcomed at the Hotel Moserwirt on arrival in Bad Goisern. We enjoy a quiet dinner with Austrian delicacies and think about what we saw during the day.
Day 4
The sun is shining, and we enjoy a hearty breakfast. Since the last two stages were a bit longer, we start the day later today. We head along the Traun along wonderful cycle paths to Bad Ischl.
We don’t want to miss the well-known Cafè Zauner and enjoy our ‘Zaunerstollen’ with a coffee by the Traun under bright sunshine. Over green fields we continue towards Wolfgangsee. We stop for lunch in Strobl, and of course don’t miss a refreshing glass of wine – before we reach our stage destination of Abersee in the early afternoon. Since it’s early we decide to explore the place which sits on the Wolfgangsee.
By the way: if you don’t want to miss the panorama from the Schafberg over the surrounding lake district, I can highly recommend taking an additional day here on the Wolfgangsee.
Day 5
Even before we started I was looking forward to this last cycling stage. Not because I wanted to end the journey, but because it is very varied and includes a hike.
After the one-hour hike we reach the Tiefbrunnau and cycle down the Strubklmamm from there and arrive in the Mozart city of Salzburg. Here we have an impressive view of the Hohensalzburg fortress, which dates back to the 11th century. Always accompanied by the river Salzach we cycle a few kilometres to Oberndorf, from where we shorten the route and return directly to our office in Obertrum.
