The Salzach and the Saalach run their course through the flat valley between the impressive Hohen Tauern mountains and the district of Salzburg. The river is a great place for families to cycle and it is also very diverse. You can visit the Krimmler waterfalls (the highest in Europe) and can go along the Salzach and Saalach past lush green meadows and snow covered mountains until you reach Salzburg, the festival city. The pleasant stages are ideal for families, who would like to go on a cycling holiday for the first time but also offer more experienced cyclists time to explore other things in addition to doing the cycling tour. It is good to have excess time though because in almost every place you go past there is a natural lake, a pool or a free time park to play and splash around in. A bit of time should also be used to explore the nature along the way on route or to go to the ‘Hohe Tauern’ national park centre. Stop off along the way at some of the excellent guest houses and enjoy the Austrian food like ‘Pinzgauer Kasnocken’, ‘Kaspressknödel’ and ‘Salzburger Nockerl’. Whether it be the food, the culture or the nature: you are bound to be charmed by this cycle tour along the Tauern cycle path!
Arrive in Krimml and move into your accommodation. The rental bikes (if booked) are in your hotel. From afar, you can spot them and marvel: the Krimml waterfalls! But don’t let that suffice, make sure you go and pay a visit to the largest waterfalls in Europe. Water crashes down about 400m. Walk along the path and admire the natural spectacle.
Your tour goes through the „Nationalpark Hohe Tauern“ and „Oberpinzgau“. On this trail you will have a fabulous backdrop with lush green meadows and small villages. The landscape will remind you on some fairy tales! In Kaprun you can visit the “Hochgebirgsstauseen” (high-mountain reservoir).
The Zeller Lake invites for a refreshment, and the sportive cyclers can add an extra round. You will cycle through “Maria Alm” with its famous pilgrimage church and soon reach Saalfelden.
On your way to Lofer you will be impressed by the unspoilt nature. You will get a view of the “Steinernes Meer” and you will be entirely surrounded by mountains, which steeply ascend. It looks like something out of Middle Earth. Take time to visit the Seisenbergklamm as well as the Lamprechtshöhlen (caves) before you reach Unken.
Only a short distance and you will have reached Salzburg, the city of Mozart. The cultural offer will embrace you. You should allow yourself enough extra time for a stroll through the city and a visit to Mozart´s birth house.
Your cycle tour ends today in the wonderful city of Salzburg. There is a lot to see: the famous water games, the large zoo or the great cafes in the centre of town. Why not spend a few more days here in Salzburg?
Tour character
