The laurel forest of Los Tilos in the northeast of the island awaits you: Lush grren, almost jungle-like vegetation presents itself on the initial hike with mighty laurel trees, tree heather, ferns and an impressive waterfall right at the beginning of the stage. You ascend on steep terrain to the Las Barandas viewpoint with spectacular views of the gorge and the sea. Downhill through the Herradura-gorge and past apple trees to the Barlovento Lagoon.
Today’s hike promises fabulous views of the rugged cliffs of the North. Hike to La Tosca, a village with many old dragon trees. Your path runs through five gorges on the so-called ‚Camino Real,‘ the King’s hiking trail. The old path connects the individual villages at the top of the mountain ridges. In the village of Gallegos you have the opportunity to rest before you tackle the extremely impressive gorge all the way to Franceses.
The Northwest of the island is known for its dry climate and beautiful sunsets. The vegetation is also very different from that in the East of the island. The landscape is characterised by succulents, prickly pears and almond trees. You start from the village of Tijarafe with a view of countless serpentines and the deep blue Atlantic to the Poris de Candelaria, the ‚Smuggler’s Bay‘. Continue uphill through the Jurado-gorge.
The heart of the island is the Caldera de Taburiente National Park, a place steeped in history that the natives called ‚Acero‘. With a river that flows all year round, splashing waterfalls, pillow lava and steep cliffs, countless impressions await you. From the starting point in Los Brecitos you have a stunning panorama of the cauldron. You descend through fragrant pine forest over the Reventón-pass with a view onto the Limonero-gorge.
Volcanoes-themed hike: the so-called Cumbre Vieja consists of many historical craters that have formed in the last 500 years. From the Refugio El Pilar you ascend to the tree line, where a spectacular view reveals itself: in front of you the crater landscapes of Hoyo Negro and Duraznero, behind you the Caldera with Mount Bejenado. Lapilli and lava bombs, plus many different shades of colour, accompany you on this hike.
At the end of your hiking holiday you ascend to the highest point of the island, the Roque de los Muchachos at an altitude of 2426 m, the second highest point in the Canary archipelago. From there the eye wanders over the entire island and to the neighboring island of Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro.
