Lanzarote

Island Crossing from West to East.

A whopping 300 volcanic cones were created by the massive eruptions on Lanzarote and coined the fitting name ‘Fire Island’ for the country situated in the middle of the sea. In addition to volcanic rock, the name César Manrique is particularly present on the island. The landscape artist has decisively shaped the volcanic island with his paintings and sculptures. It is therefore almost inevitable to encounter works of art by the famous painter. Lanzarote: Simple landscape paired with Canarian architecture and black mountains as a contrast.

The absolute highlight, however, is the biosphere reserve. Although it has existed since 1993, it is still an absolute insider tip. Many rarely used hiking paths in the barren landscape allow hikers to see the island from a different perspective. A true treat for the eyes, the island of Lanzarote!

Details about the hiking holiday on Lanzarote

The volcanic island off the coast of West Africa is not only home to breathtaking scenery, but also excellent wine. Especially in the area of La Geria you can enjoy fine wines. What makes viticulture on Lanzarote special? The vineyards are laid out in a semicircle and protected from the wind by lava stones. In addition, the lapilli layers store water perfectly. Thus, there are optimal conditions for viticulture on the volcanic island.

Highlights of the hiking holiday on Lanzarote

  • The Tanit Museum: In San Bartolomé you not only reach the geographical centre of the island, the ‘Monumento al Compesino’. The Museum of Ethnology houses many cultural treasures and is worth a visit.
  • Village of Nazareth: On day 3 you will continue into the goat cheese area to the white-washed village of Nazareth. Our culinary tip: Try the goat cheese with Parma ham and figs! This is a treat for both the palate and the eyes.

Things to know about hiking on Lanzarote

With the daily hikes you are on your feet for about two to two and a half hours. Due to the many vineyards, there are numerous opportunities to enjoy breaks sampling delicious wines.

Itinerary

You hike to the traditional village of Uga, where Arabian camels are still bred to this day, after that you proceed into the very lauded wine-growing region of the island, where the countless craters on the ‚Picón‘ (volcanic ash fields up to a size of 2.5 m) enable a very special way of viticulture. Volcanic rocks arranged in a semi-circle protect the vines from the wind and the layers of lapilli accumulate water perfectly. Should the opportunity arise, we highly recommend you do not miss out on sampling local wines.

Here you have the option to climb up the volcano ‚Monte Corona‘ (609 m). After that you descend to the Northern coastline to the ferry port of Orzola, a lovely town impressing with its blue- and white-washed houses and its plain but especially great fish restaurants.

Tolle Insel
