Best of Moselsteig, Bullay – Treis Karden

The most beautiful river-bends between Eifel and Hunsrück.

Wine lovers, foodies and nature lovers will get their money's worth on this tour - although we don't know anyone who hasn't taken the Moselle region to their heart after a visit. Fantastic panoramas meet an impressive river landscape and the historical viticulture meets the 2000 year old history of the region. Come with us on this varied tour!

Details of the hiking tour with Eurohike

Board the MoselweinBahn from Bullay and enjoy the ride through the valley to Traben-Trarbach. From here, hike to Grevenstein Castle and through the ruins before continuing to enchanting Enkirch. The next stage is all about the views: The Petersberg and the Calmont are calling out to be hiked. The latter is not only Europe's steepest vineyard, but also offers the best view of the Bremmer Bogen.

The last stage leads via the Pinnerkreuz into the Dortebachtal nature reserve. An impressive waterfall exudes - in the truest sense of the word - a fairytale atmosphere. The route continues through idyllic vineyards to Martberg, where you follow in the footsteps of the Romans and Celts. For centuries, this was a political centre, and you can visit it today. The tour ends in Treis-Karden, from where you will return home with many memories.

Highlights of the Best of Moselsteig hiking tour

  • Fantastic vantage points: Whether Petersberg, Calmont or Pinnerkreuz - during the five days on the Moselle you will not only climb mountains (or take the shortcut via cable car), but also enjoy the most magnificent views of the region.
  • Vineyards & traditional winegrowers' taverns: If there's one thing you shouldn't miss here, it's the world-famous wines. Whether Riesling, Müller-Thurgau or Pinot Noir - a glass or two just has to be tasted alongside the regional delicacies. Of course, the fine wines make perfect presents for those back home.
  • Quiet villages with half-timbered houses: The charming gems along the tour could serve as the setting for a fairy tale. Numerous half-timbered houses and gastronomic gems mostly on or near the river banks - a must-see!
  • Imposing castles, fortresses and palaces as far as the eye can see! In the Moselle valley, you don't have to hike far until you pass a historic wall. These will take you back to times gone by.
  • Unique boxwood forest: This evergreen tree actually grows in more southerly regions. However, due to the mild climate and the "abundance of sunshine" on the Moselle, boxwood also grows here. By the way, it is particularly beautiful to look at in spring, when it bears its cluster-like blossoms.

Useful information about the 5-day tour in the Moselle Valley

Hiking here is pure enjoyment, not least because of the great hiking trails. There’s a reason why the Moselsteig has been designated a quality hiking trail. The route is not only varied and beautiful, the signposting is also perfect.

Itinerary

You reach the start of the tour via the legendary Mosel wine railway and cross Germany’s longest hanging viaduct in the art-deco town Traben-Trabach. You ascend on steep terrain to Grevenstein castle and proceed on the ‚Franzosensteig‘-trail via spiral staircases and via ferratas straight through the ruins. Spectacular too is the view into the depth down to the river. An alpine hiking section along the ridge Kirster Grat leads you accompanied with great views to Enkirch, where we highly recommend you visit the historic half-timber houses. Onwards through wine growing areas and the vineyards you proceed to Bullay, where a wine tasting of the best Mosel wines awaits.

After the descent and the river crossing near Neef you ascend Mount Calmont on the other side. You hike up Europe‘s steepest vineyard, where grapes are grown on an incline of up to 55 degrees. You proceed via a Roman high-altitude settlement with a view onto the rock spire ‚Eller Todesangst‘ past the ‚Galgenlay-Pavillon‘ and reach Cochem by train.

You ascend to the Pinner-cross, a marvelous rock pulpit located above Cochem, either on foot or by chair lift. Along hiking paths high above the river you proceed to the legendary refuge ‚Wingerts Budche‘. The Dortebachtal-nature reserve, the Pommerer Forest and the via ferrata through the Schilzer-basin provide pleasant walking conditions in the shade. Through green vineyards you reach Mount Martberg, where you can visit a nicely restored Roman temple complex. Narrow trails snake their way through dense woodland down into the valley and into the Day Finish Treis-Karden.

If you like, you can take another short tour along the impressive boxwood trail or continue hiking to Eltz Castle. Return to Treis Karden by train. Afterwards you can start your departure.

Characteristics of the route

You mainly walk on well-maintained hiking paths and trails, on graveled vineyard paths and remote forest paths. The panoramic paths featuring great views lead you in parts across steep terrain and rocks, here surefootedness is a prerequisite. The ascents and descents of the mountain ranges of the Mosel river valley are mastered easily with a good basic fitness level. Daily tours can easily and comfortably be cut short by train any time.

Moselsteig
Excellent trip. Very well marked route with lots of variety. Autumn is a good time with amazing Autumn colours and grape harvesting. One of the best organised trips we have done. This tour does require a good head for heights. There were not many good restaurants which surprised us, its easier to get a glass of wine than coffee and cake!

Best of Moselsteig (Trier - Koblenz)
