Spanish Way of St. James, Sarria – Santiago de Compostela

From Sarria to Santiago de Compostela.

The last hundred kilometres of the Way of St. James are meant to be the “classic” section of the popular pilgrims route, which leads through half of Europe. Along this part you cross Galicia, the green and westernmost province of Spain. A diversified landscape, pleasant temperatures and friendly people are accompanying you. And the Galician cuisine is pampering you with regional delicacies from the countryside and sea. Enjoy it with a glass of local Ribero white wine. Take your time, to visit the biggest cultural places of interest. The goal of all pilgrims, Santiago de Compostela, together with its outstanding cathedral is also the last station and highlight of your journey. While eating a “Tarta de Santiago” (cake with almonds) you look back on your walking week along the Camino Francés.

Itinerary

The first part of your walking tour leads you through Santiago de Barbadelo, where we recommend visiting the romantic church. The church from the 12th century has wonderful porches, which are decorated for instance with flowers and scallops. Via Brea with its 100-milestone the path leads to Ferreiros. After the visit of church Santa Maria de Ferreiros you continue to famous pilgrimage village Portomarin.

ca. 5 to 6 hours
23 km
300 m
640 m

After your start in Portomarin you walk up to Monte S. Antonio and afterwards down to Toxibo and Gonzar, to church Santa Maria. Through green landscapes and past many romantic churches the route leads you into the small town of Palas de Rei. It is not definitely proved if Palas de Rei was a royal official residence in former times, the visit of the frescoes in church San Tirso is worth it anyway.

ca. 5 hours
20 km
450 m
370 m

The pilgrimage path leads you through bewitching landscape, and past Leboreiro with its old pilgrims hospice to Mélide, where you can try the Galician delicacy “Pulpo á feira” (calamari). In the next village you reach, in Castañeda the lime for the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela was kilned. Via Ribadiso de Baixo, a village with rich pilgrim history you reach Arzùa, your goal for today.

ca. 6 hours
29 km
150 m
840 m

On today’s hike you can see how the villages get bigger and more urban as you get closer to your destination  of Santiago. The Way of St. James meanders like a green ribbon through the gently rolling landscape, you pass medieval stone bridges and the pazos (country houses) characteristic for this region. You will stay overnight in the small village of O Pino or in the neighboring town of O Pedrouzo.

Loop tour and visit of the impressing and antique cathedral of Santiago, a popular place of pilgrimage for Christians, with more than 75.000 pilgrims visiting yearly. Before you explore the historic old city, which is part of the UNESCO world cultural heritage, you should participate at the impressing pilgrim Mass.

Characteristics of the route

A hilly path leads you through the green landscape of Galicia with numerous eucalyptus forests and cornfields. The route leads along walking paths and forest roads as well as along silent side roads.
