Details on the hiking tour Salzburg´s Peaks and Kitzbühel Alps

With the “Pinzgau Walk”, the journey of around 17 km starts with an absolute highlight. Here it’s really high, because the high-altitude hike is at around 1,600 to 2,000 metres. Wonderful views and rustic huts await the hard-working hikers as a reward.

Next, the famous Schwalbenwand with its two peaks is waiting to be hiked by you. Direct your gaze from above to the Steinerne Meer, the Leoganger Steinberge or the Hohe Tauern. Down the valley you go to Maria Alm, a delightful village, just as you would imagine in the Salzburg Alps. On day 4, you finally go up to the Steinerne Meer with impressive views, including the majestic Lichtenberg Castle. We also recommend this hiking tour with your dog.

Highlights of the hike Salzburg’s Peaks & Kitzbühel Alps

  • Well-known holiday regions: In addition to the hiking routes, enjoy the lively villages of Zell am See, Saalbach and Maria Alm in summer.
  • Panoramic high-altitude hikes: Lush alpine pastures, rocky routes and fresh mountain air - soak up this special atmosphere. The highlights are undoubtedly the panoramic views, which could easily have sprung from a picture book.
  • Views of Austria's highest peaks: the Großglockner, the Kitzsteinhorn and around 30 other “three-thousand-metre peaks” show their concentration during the high-altitude hike of the “Pinzgauer Walk”.
  • Austrian cosiness & culinary delicacies: Hiking brings lots of opportunities to take a break. In the many hospitable huts, Pinzgauer Kasnocken, Krapfen and the likes await!

Useful information about hiking on the Salzburg´s peaks and the Kitzbühel Alps

The stages of the 5-day tour are easily manageable with a length of 13 to 17 km, but the routing of the high-altitude hiking trails is quite demanding. You should plan up to six hours for the day tours, although there are leisurely alternative routes (e.g. in the valley). The ascent and descent on the “Pinzgau Walk” is included.

Beautiful high routes on well-maintained paths and forest roads.  Tour requires good basic fitness level for walking days of up to 6 hours as well as surefootedness on just a few sections. In some cases comfortable alternative routes are possible. We suggest this tour to everyone who likes the alpine pasture scenery and beautiful views.

5 Day Self Guided Hike in the Zell am See area
Our experience with Eurohike was great! The team was responsive before arriving and were able to confirm our booking even though it was close to the chosen departure date. They continued to be helpful upon our return home as we sorted out a minor refund. Online/phone staff AND the person we met on the ground the first day were all helpful and easy to deal with. We choose a 5 day self guided package, with three days of hiking, including 4 nights accommodation and we choose the full board package. Our main hotel in Zell um See was very comfortable, central and the staff helpful and welcoming. The food was excellent and we were happy to have chosen the full board - although there were plenty of options for evening meals if we had wanted to go out. Baggage transfers between hotels was seamless - our bags were where they were supposed to be when we needed them. We had one night away from Zell um See in a very comfortable and lovely village we hiked to that day and the staff were also helpful and organized. Although the package of guiding material was extensive and complete - HIGHLY recommend that hikers use the GPS system provided! It was essential and some of the trails we found ourselves on were not well used, although all trails are marked. Milestones were not always consistent with the maps or the GPS data. We also found that the times noted in the material provided AND marked on the trail markets to indicate how long each stage of the hike would take were very very optimistic! There did not seem to be any accounting for a stage that was 2 km straight up vs 2km relatively flat. Start early! And be prepared to have some long days on the trails! We brought food with us - but had asked specifically which trails/sections there might be a meal available during the hike. We were looking forward to a mountain meal. Unfortunately, most of the places noted as having a meal were not open (we hiked mid week in June) or were at the start of a hike rather than the middle when we were looking for a drink or food. This was not a big deal as we did bring food and plenty of water - but be prepared to do the same in case places are not open. We had a lovely time and would certainly use Eurohike again! Thanks to everyone for helping to make it a perfect mountain excursion.

Absolutely recommended!
It was my first "real" hiking trip. Also the first one, but for sure not the last one, with Eurohike! I had some concerns with regards to Eurohike as a travel agency, and also in terms of safety, as I am a solo-traveler. Eurohike took all the doubts away, the advisors made it such a great experience already from the beginning, when I started searching for a suitable trip. The staff were very kind, always available and very responsive, we communicated via email and phone in English - no language barrier at all. When I arrived at the hotel all the travel documents were already waiting for me. I simply loved the trip and all the amazing experiences, views, people I met, simply all was a stunning holiday! I was lucky with the weather which made it even better experience. The luggage transfer was always perfectly organized, no delays, no issues, no waiting. All the hotels know the quality of Eurohike so they were always well prepared for me and very welcoming. Hotels were of a very good quality, breakfasts always great. Next time I will take the half-board option as it seems to be worthwhile. I used the "hotline" option twice and the conclusion is that they will not help you with the directions (e.g. when you lose the way) but they are always available, super helpful and fast with any other requests. As for the hikes themselves: if you chose a 4-mountain difficulty level, be prepared for quite challenging days. It does require a good fitness level and good terrain orientation. On this hike the first day is already a challenge. "Your Guide" (a booklet with the itinerary details) you get is your hiking-bible! If you study it well and follow (very well described) the directions, you will not get lost and you will make the hikes safely and on time. Estimated daily hike times are pretty accurate but only if you follow the route. I needed extra time for taking photos, having lunch etc. Even though I consider myself fit and fast, I would add at least an hour to each time estimation. Sometimes it is also good to take the "easy-pink" route. I found it really helpful one day, when the hike route was quite challenging. Things to mind (maybe for Eurohike to improve): I did not find GPS that good, honestly I got lost because, instead of following "the book" directions, I trusted the GPS…Also the intro/orientation meeting could be better organized so the travellers get more details especially around safety measures, "what-if" scenarios etc. Bottomline: I had an unforgettable hiking holiday, I totally recommend Eurohike and I am ready for my next hiking tour :-) Ewa, Netherlands
