Facts about the hiking holiday High-Altitude Paths, Lakes & Dachstein-Glacier
Even the journey to the Traunsee gives a first glimpse of the fabulous panoramas that await you over the coming days. Glittering lakes, spectacular high-altitude trails and views of the Dachstein-Glacier are your companions on the hiking tour in the Salzkammergut. The mountain hikes lead over good hiking and forest trails, some in alpine terrain. The daily stages are scheduled to last up to 5.5 hours.
The route leads you above the deepest of all lakes in the Salzkammergut-region past the enchanting peninsula of Traunkirchen, a scenic gem, which has already inspired many painters and artists. From here you start a steep ascent to the first impressive peak, located just like an eagle’s nest high above the lake’s water surface. You proceed along a mountain trail via Mount Sonnstein into the saltworks-town of Ebensee.
By the Feuerkogelbahn-cable car you ascend effortlessly into the rocky karst-desert of the Höllengebirge-mountains. The surroundings here create a stark contrast to the bright green of the valley. If you fancy hiking on rocky paths up to the karstified high plateau, you get to experience a scenery which resembles a lunarscape. After a break in the Rieder-refuge you descend again by cable car and then take the bus into the imperial town of Bad Ischl.
You proceed along Empress Sissi’s favourite route across meadows and fields to a little mountain lake, located well-hidden in the dense forest below the steep mountainsides of the Katrin-massif. You cross the former border into the ‚Salzburg-Salzkammergut‘ all the way to the shores of Lake Wolfgangsee, where the marvellous lake promenade invites to an extensive rest. Then through an idyllic nature reserve always along the lake with the renowned hotel ‚Weisses Rössl‘ and the prominent Mount Schafberg always in plain view.
Today you discover the unique alpine scenery of the Postalm-area: Through the gorge of the stream Zinkenbach you ascend through the forest to the initial alps and proceed further and further into the mountains. Via the Niedergaden-alp and the Thorhöhe-peak you cross extensive mountain pastures past grazing cattle and horses and reach a quaint mountain hut, where you will spend the night under the sparkling stars.
An extensive alp-tour through idyllic high-alpine pastures you proceed past the highest peaks of the Osterhorn-mountains. Via lush pastures to the Rinnberg-alp, where the Alpine dairymaid awaits with fresh dairy products derived from the grazing livestock. Listen to the chime of cow bells during a short break before proceeding with the route into the pretty mountaineering village Rußbach and onwards into the beautiful Gosau-valley.
As a finale to your hiking holiday already several highlights await. You ascend high up to the Zwiesel-alp along the Herrenweg-path, here the impressive mountain ridge of the ‚Salzburg Dolomites‘ greets you with its jagged summit-peaks and the white, snow covered area of the glacier appears within your grasp. You take a leisurely ride by cable car back into the valley and at the same time enjoy the fabulous view onto the glistening Lake Gosausee, reflecting grandly in its water area the one and only ‚King Dachstein‘.
You hike on well-maintained hiking- and forest paths, in parts on forest roads, but also on rocky alpine tracks. Mainly on the first days along the moutnain tracks, a certain amount of surefootedness and a head for heights is required. For the hiking tours with a walking time of up to 5.5 hours a good basic fitness level is necessary. Many times you have a shorter or longer option to choose from. A hiking week suited to people who like a mixture of varied hiking paths with plenty of amazing views, alp-tracks and easy alpine terrain.
