Because of his love of castles, operas and the theatre he had the reputation of the fairy tale king. The remarkable Lake Starnberg

At the time of Ludwig II of Bavaria, today’s Lake Starnberg was called Würmsee. It is Germany’s fifth largest lake. The idyllic water offers unique panoramic vies and is a delight for nature-loving hikers. Not far from the western shore of the lake is the Rose Island, which was regularly visited by the much-loved Empress Elizabeth of Austria, better known as ‘Sisi’. Bathing fun awaits you in the midst of these impressive landscapes. Also: art lovers take note! You will have a wonderful view of the lake from the Buchheim Museum. In addition, you have the opportunity to marvel at a great collection of expressionist works in the extremely modern museum building.

The wild and romantic Ammerschlucht

A place for true nature enthusiasts! Here you walk according to the motto: hiking happiness at every turn. What is considered the ‘Grand Canyon of Upper Bavaria’ enchants with unique natural spectacles. While hiking through the gorge, listen to the rushing water and marvel at the unique rock formations.

The Royal Castle Hohenschwangau

Experience idyll up close! The breath taking Hohenschwangau Castle, the parental home of the king, stretches along the banks of the Alpsee. Ludwig not only spent his childhood in the four walls of Hohenschwangau, but later also used the castle as a holiday home. As you walk through the chambers and imposing halls, you will feel aristocratic for a few moments! Then the path continues through the Schwanseepark towards Schwansee.

The fairytale Neuschwanstein Castle

During his reign, King Ludwig II of Bavaria had several castles built. They were meaningless at the time, but today are among the most popular sights in the world. In 1868, Ludwig wrote a letter to Richard Wagner, in which he put his dream of a new castle onto paper. He wrote about what would form today’s Neuschwanstein Castle, which towers 200 metres above the valley. A true fairytale castle! In 1884 the palace was completed and was always considered one of Ludwig’s favourite residences. Overall, the king is said to have spent 172 nights in the castle.
