Arrival in Kulmbach
Nice that you have decided to go on this cycling trip along the Upper Main! You start your tour in the brewery town of Kulmbach in the heart of Upper Franconia. Stroll leisurely through the winding alleys of the old town and visit the Plassenburg, the town's landmark. If you are interested, visit the Kulmbach Mönchshof, which houses three museums worth seeing: the Bavarian Brewery Museum, the Bavarian Bakery Museum and the German Spice Museum.
After a few kilometres, the two headwaters of the Roter and Weißer Main rivers flow together to form the Main. The young Main now makes its way through the ever-widening valley past the towns of Burgkunstadt and Lichtenfels. Would you like to get to know one of the most important buildings of the German Baroque period? Then you should pay a visit to the pilgrimage church of Vierzehnheiligen. The church is located on a hill just before your stage destination Bad Staffelstein. The way there is strenuous, in the Obermain Therme you can recover perfectly from the day's exertions.
Today you can really enjoy your cycling trip along the Upper Main. Passing colourful meadows with old fruit trees, you pedal leisurely through the beautiful landscapes of the extensive Main valley. You will pass small picturesque villages, each with its own unique charm. On the way, take the opportunity to take a break and cool off, as the cycle path takes you through a dreamlike lake landscape. Your stage destination Bamberg has a lot to offer. Stroll through the winding alleys of the old town, visit the imperial cathedral and fortify yourself with Franconian specialities and a freshly brewed beer in a traditional brewery restaurant.
Perhaps a short tour of the city of seven hills and a last look from the observation tower of the graceful Geyerwörth Castle with its unforgettable view before you leave Bamberg. The Main cycle path takes you from the realms of "Beer Franconia" to "Wine Franconia". The cosy half-timbered and wine town of Zeil am Main is the first proof of this. Your stage destination Haßfurt is at the foot of the Haßberge mountains. A stroll shows you rarities from bygone times, such as the unique Haßfurt Knight's Chapel by Tilmann Riemenschneider.
The Main leads you first to the "ball bearing city" of Schweinfurt. Leisurely along the excellently developed Main cycle path, you cycle through romantically situated villages, wide vineyards, extensive orchards and lush green Main meadows. Shortly before Volkach, you should pay a visit to Tilman Riemenschneider's most famous carving: The "Madonna in the Rosary" in the pilgrimage church of St. Maria. The best Franconian wines grow and thrive around Volkach: whether Riesling, Silvaner, Weißburgunder or Beerenauslese.
The Volkacher Mainschleife and the shady floodplains make for an excellent ride. Via the wine trading town of Kitzingen, you mostly cycle directly along the Main to vibrant Würzburg. The lively baroque and cultural city lies amidst vineyards and is dominated by the Marienberg Fortress. Outstanding sights such as the Residenz, St. Kilians Cathedral, Neumünster, the historic ensemble of the Marienkapelle and Falkenhaus on the market square, the Old Main Bridge and the traditional wineries in the middle of the old town make Würzburg an experience.
Departure
Tour character
The cycle path runs almost exclusively along the banks of the Main, so that the route is flat throughout and there are hardly any ascents to overcome. The paths are well developed, asphalted and well signposted. Also suitable for beginners and families.
